learning by listening to everything in english from native speaker
>> Monday, March 30, 2009
as we've already knew, english has been international language for a long time and i think it will still be at the future. all people around the world will continue to use english, no matter why it had to be english, not indonesian or javanese. i won't try to answer such question here, but more importantly why there are still people don't fell convenient with english.
my friend, you can't speak english fluently today? just calm down, don't be panic. i believe that you (and i) are not too stupid (like what we've always assumed about ourselves) that will make you (or us) must encounter some problems in speaking english. however, many people i've known always say that they feel difficult to speak in english, simply, they don't know how to start or they don't know which words must be choosen. ok, you (and i) are non-native speaker, so what? is it because of this fact so we may let ourselves get problems in english?
i stay to believe that human has given such intelligence in mastering every languages, no exception to english. but, how to use that amazing potential optimally depends greatly on the methods we've done. as we know, basic skills in every languages are listening, speaking, reading, and writing. and so far as i know, almost of us have learnt secondary language(s) at our school. at the time, the most developed (and might be the first we got) skill in our new language is reading rather than listening or speaking. it makes clear why we've been little confused at grammar.
every baby start to learn his/her mother's language from listening, not from reading obviously. i will not question why we must take different way at school when we start to learn new language(s). i just want to remember us the most natural way to learn our new languages. according to my observation, listening and then speaking is (or at least shold be) considered as the most natural way i've mentioned before. but, how we make use of this?
so, my friend, i suggest you to feel free and comfort to listen to a native speaker directly (may be in seminar, course, radio etc) or in the form of recording (may be a television show etc). when there is a translation, just ignore it. by doing this, i hope you may find something interesting about the language, such as the pronouncing, accent, art in phrase, etc. after that, don't shy to show your new words you have just learnt, just be confidence. at first, there is no need in perfect use of grammar actually, just make it flows and your grammar will eventually be better and better, insya Allah.
when you find it works, you may combine it with reading and writing. once again, don't focused (to seriously) on grammar. for me, grammar is just complementary, not the language itself.
ok, what are you waiting for? let's try it!
